I don’t like to throw parties, because I’m afraid nobody will come, and if they do come, they will regret having done so.
It was therefore with great trepidation that I scheduled not one, but two book launch parties earlier this month. Worst of all, for an introvert like me, I would be the center of attention.
On a Monday night, August 6, we threw open the doors to our southern Maine book launch party, and any fears of poor attendance were laid to rest. Folks from all walks of my life — relatives, former coworkers, friends from northern Maine who had relocated south, new friends from the Portland area, coworkers of Kim’s, and more — filled up the event room at Willows restaurant in South Portland, Maine.
There was a line for purchasing the book, and everyone ate, drank, and mingled with one another. I read several excerpts, and I took questions from the audience. I didn’t spontaneously burst into flames. In fact, I rather enjoyed myself, and unless I’m living in a delusional world, which is possible, I think most other people enjoyed themselves too.
Here’s a video of my first reading. The gentleman introducing me is my brother, Andy.
On Sunday night, August 12, we took the show on the road to my hometown of Lincoln, Maine, and Gilmore’s restaurant. The reception was unbelievable, and I was humbled by the outpouring of love for the second time in less than a week.
Much of my memoir takes place in Lincoln, where I grew up with my beloved, quadriplegic mother. Folks from her generation and mine came out to reconnect with Kim and me, and to celebrate the book.
The love and support I received at both launch parties was beyond my wildest expectations, as were the book sales. After four years of hard work, it is so satisfying to see the book bring joy to so many people.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
For those who missed out on the parties, but would still like to purchase a book you can find them at Nonesuch Books or CIA Café in South Portland, or you can order from Amazon by clicking here. Kim and I also have a supply at home. Stop over for a visit and buy a book.

Angela, thanks for your kind words!
I’ve always enjoyed my book talks Mitch, and I’m glad you did too. Hope you’ll be able to do more of them, and maybe someday I can get to one. I was very pleased to be able to write a review of your amazing book. It is inspiring. – george smith
George, thanks for stopping by and dropping a note. I’ll let you know if I do A book talk in central Maine. Thank you so much for taking the time to read and write about my book.
Congratulation! Looking forward to reading this.
I hope you enjoy it!
